ANT participated in a competition for a new exhibition center for the Astruptunet museum and former farm of artist Nikolai Astrup. He was a painter, draftsman and graphic artist, and was constantly inspired by the landscape around him, which is reflected in much of the art he produced.

Architectural design

"The Point of View" is based on Astrup's enthusiasm for landscape perspectives. We are particularly inspired by the Sandalstrand paintings, where Astrup painted the same landscape section over and over again, in all different seasons. In the design, it is therefore not the building volumes that play the main role, but rather the spaces between the buildings (the yard), which frame the view of the landscape.

The main idea for the architectural design is that the building should harmonize with its surroundings and refer to Astruptunet in form and scale, while at the same time expressing contemporary aesthetics through the use of materials and design detailing. The buildings have an oblique slope to highlight the viewing axis and the characteristic mountains around Jølstadvatnet.

The center functions as a yard, partially buried in the slope, where the functions are distributed in various farm buildings. The Setvering building, which is the main building, is reached via an elevator from the bus shelter down by the vevien, or via an access road or stairs from the parking lot above.

The exhibition building appears as two volumes, where a continuous base contains the exhibition and associated storage. Between the buildings, one moves on plateaus established in the terrain, inspired by Astrup's paintings.

Material use

The viewing center should blend into the landscape and not compete with Astruptunet. The use of materials should therefore be toned down and modest so that the buildings from a distance become a natural part of the cultural landscape. At the same time, the architectural expression is part of a story about Nikolai Astrup, an artist forever inspired by the landscape, but also as an innovative botanist.

The use of wood and concrete materials has a tactile quality, which emphasizes a multifaceted personality. The intention for detailing and decoration of the buildings is a collaboration with a (local) contemporary artist, who can contribute local history and building practices.

Sustainability and environment

The proposal for the exhibition center has high environmental ambitions. Durable and robust solutions will be chosen both inside and out, so that wear and maintenance are kept to a minimum.

Wooden structures should be used where appropriate. Wood and concrete types should be chosen with the lowest possible carbon footprint. Exterior wood cladding can be made from recycled materials. There is great potential for reuse, especially in interiors.

The center's division into smaller building volumes provides good opportunities for local water diversion, and the landscape will be designed to prevent erosion.
