ANT was responsible for the rehabilitation project in construction phase 2 of the German-Norwegian School in Oslo, where a number of industrial buildings from the early 20th century in Myren's workshop along the Akerselva River in Sagene were converted into school premises.
Before the establishment of the school, the buildings housed various offices and companies, connected by corridors and stairs. The goal of the project was to bring all the buildings together into a whole by means of a recreational corridor that uses the building's load-bearing wall as an area for both play and movement.
The project is linked on the one hand to the previous kindergarten project (completed in 2022), while on the other hand it connects to the high school, designed by TALO architects and completed at the same time as the rest of the school.
The rehabilitation included restoration of exterior walls, structural improvements and a complete redesign of the interior to adapt the spaces for educational purposes, including a library, laboratories with specialized equipment from Germany and a high-quality music room. The building's different levels were utilized to create ramps that seamlessly fit into the overall design of the recreational corridors.
The color algorithm, which was developed for earlier parts of the project, was continued throughout the rest of the school. The color palette is carefully tailored to the needs of the children and teachers, considering that colors, like the children, develop and mature over time. The palette also serves as a guide for orientation in the building and provides an intuitive understanding of the functions of the different rooms.
