Arendal Folkebad is a collaborative project carried out with Henning Larsen Architects for AS Backe, engaged by Arendal Fossekompani!
(All illustrations are created and owned by Henning Larsen Architects)

The building is designed as a natural extension of Bryggebyen outside the center of Arendal, a hub for the entire town and the surrounding area. The architecture must have a relationship to the Coastal Road for access, a relationship to Tromsøysund for the sea, a connection to the surrounding areas and a relationship to outdoor spaces with quality.
The main focus was to be able to create good contact between water inside and outside, with the surrounding green areas through large window areas that let in light and views.

The first floor of the building is designed for the folk bath. An inviting entrance is planned from the access zone in the north, via a covered colonnade. The entrance leads to the reception and cafe area as a hub for the folk bath. From the reception you can look into the swimming hall area, or out towards the green area and the sea to the south.
The swimming halls that the building will contain are a 25-metre pool, a family pool with a slide, a sports pool and a therapy and training pool. Saunas belong to bathing areas for relaxation between strokes.
The second floor will contain a grandstand with a view of the sports pool, separate training areas, an office and a break room for employees.

Arendal Folkebad will be a destination for play and fun, both for the residents of Arendal, but also for people from other cities. There should be a varied offer for children and adults of all ages, and it should be an attraction that will attract visitors again and again.
A sculptural diving tower is placed as a focal point in the swimming hall, which stands in that part of the room, and has a view out to Tromøysund. There are diving boards in varying sizes that will be able to offer a unique experience of diving out towards the view and the sea beyond.
The family pool has an exciting design with various activities for children. The pool is located near the cafe and has seating so that adults can have an overview while enjoying a cup of coffee.
In the swimming hall, there are two slides for children and adults of different ages, located by the diving pool. The 25m pool can be used for floating play elements.

ANT has the main responsibility for the swimming hall part of the building, while Henning Larsen handles the planning for the rest, as well as outdoor areas and connections to the surrounding areas.
This is a live project and details will change as the process progresses.
